On the surface, adoption may seem like a simple process wherein a couple visits an agency, chooses a baby from a catalog, and they live happily ever after. The reality is much more complicated and expensive.
A legitimate adoption involves a lot of paperwork, and even more so if a couple plans to adopt a child living in a foreign country.
As a primer, Attorney Shane Kersh shares some eye-opening facts about adoption.
• It is estimated that out of 25 families in the United States, one has at least an adopted child.
• Out of all the families that have at least one adopted child, over 90 percent of them have consulted with a lawyer.

• Around 15% of adoptions come from other countries, which is as aforementioned, a much more complicated process, and one that would require a lawyer well-versed in family law.
• Over 115,000 children from the United States foster care system can and are waiting to be adopted.
• The average age of children in the United States foster care system waiting to be adopted is 7.5 years.
