Shane Kersh provides quality family law counsel in the great state of Texas. Adoption is among the many types of cases that he’s worked on.

On the surface, adoption may seem like a simple process wherein a couple visits an agency, chooses a baby from a catalog, and they live happily ever after. The reality is much more complicated and expensive.

A legitimate adoption involves a lot of paperwork, and even more so if a couple plans to adopt a child living in a foreign country.

As a primer, Attorney Shane Kersh shares some eye-opening facts about adoption.

• It is estimated that out of 25 families in the United States, one has at least an adopted child.
• Out of all the families that have at least one adopted child, over 90 percent of them have consulted with a lawyer.

• It is also estimated that 40 percent of adopted children are from the United States foster care system. This is the simplest and easiest route for legal adoption.
• Around 15% of adoptions come from other countries, which is as aforementioned, a much more complicated process, and one that would require a lawyer well-versed in family law.
• Over 115,000 children from the United States foster care system can and are waiting to be adopted.
• The average age of children in the United States foster care system waiting to be adopted is 7.5 years.
